Sustainability 'increasingly important to commercial property occupiers'

The environment should be considered for a number of reasons.

Commercial property occupiers are increasingly rating the sustainability of their building as a top priority.

That is the view of Darren Yates, a partner in the commercial research team at Knight Frank, who said everybody shares the same concerns about the environment.

In the future, legislation will force owners to make their commercial property green, but there is also the cost factor to consider.

Whether it is a reduction in energy bills as a result of being eco-friendly or increased sales due to consumers using a firm because of its environmental qualities, there is money to be made in going green.

"Consumers want companies that they are buying from to behave in a more environmentally-friendly way," stated Mr Yates, adding the incoming legislation is sure to achieve this.

Last week, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors reported that commercial property in the UK is trailing stock in Europe when it comes to eco-friendliness.
